Meeting of the Defence Committees of the Parliaments of the Visegrád Countries, 5 December 2025, Budapest
In the frame of the Hungarian Presidency of the Visegrád Group (V4), the meeting of the defence committees of the parliaments of the Visegrád Countries took place in Budapest on 5 December 2025 in the House of Parliament. The event was hosted by Lajos Kósa, Chairman of the Committee on Defence and Law Enforcement of the Hungarian National Assembly.
The defence committees of the V4 parliaments discussed two main issues during their meeting. The first item on the agenda was entitled "Opportunities for V4 cooperation in the defence industry and EU defence initiatives, with a special focus on artificial intelligence," with János Bóka, Minister for European Union Affairs, and László Palkovics, Commissioner for Artificial Intelligence of the Hungarian Government, giving introductory presentations. The second item on the agenda, entitled "Protecting state borders and opportunities for cross-border cooperation within the V4 framework in the context of migration as a security policy challenge", was kicked off by Bence Rétvári, Deputy Minister for Interior, and János Zoltán Kuczik Pol. Major General, Deputy Chief of the National Police.
During the discussion, Andrzej Grzyb and Piotr Strach, the chair and vice-chair of the Polish Sejm's National Defence Committee, Josef Flek and Pavel Růžička the chair and vice-chair of the Czech Chamber of Deputies' Defence Committee, and Tomáš Jirsa, the vice-chair of the Czech Senate's Foreign Affairs, Defence, and Security Committee, also took the floor and presented their positions on the items on the agenda.
The participants shared their view that cooperation on defence policy within the V4 has been strengthened in recent years, which calls for a greater emphasis on joint defence industry developments and strengthening local production capacities as a priority for the V4 countries in the near future. There was also consensus among the participants that the negative effects of illegal migration should be addressed, with a particular focus on strengthening border protection.
Lajos Kósa, Chairman shall inform Andrius Kubilius, European Commissioner for Defence and Space Policy, and Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, Chair of the European Parliament's Committee on Security and Defence Policy, about the results of the meeting.
